The Complete Works of Jack Mavrogordato
3 Volume Set in Full Color

By : Western Sporting

A simple look at the covers, lets you know these re-issues of Jack Mavrogordato's classic volumes are quality that would be bargains at double the price. With the addition of new illustrations, the publisher has given these books added value not available in the original copies. Add to that the fact that you don't have to spend hundreds of dollars just to get one of these titles anymore. This makes Mavrogordato's complete works an invaluable addition to any falconer's library at an extremely reasonable price.

A Hawk for the Bush has long been the definitive work on sparrow hawks. The information on its pages has kept is a highly sought after collector's book. Now the contents can be yours once again. The techniques covered apply not only to sparrow hawks, but to all short wing hawks. Covering topics as varied as observations on wild hawks, breeding in captivity, diet, mishaps and health and disease would make this book indispensable, but the other chapters cover the rest you need to know about sparrow hawks and short wings. All in all a must have for anyone thinking of flying a short wing of any kind.

Mavrogordato's second treatise, A Falcon in the Field, is just as complete as his first. This time the specialization is on long wings. Once again he covers everything you need to know about training, flying and hunting with long wings. Mavrogordato is even so detailed as to cover the types of quarry and what type of flight they are taken with. For those of you who want a bird with high stoops there is a section on game hawking which covers all types of feathered game normally caught by long wings. If ground quarry is more to your liking then there is a section on flights from the hood. Again it is mainly for feathered game caught near the ground, but also has a section on hares and how to approach them. As you can see, another mandatory title for your falconry library.

The last book in the set is an up close look at the man behind the birds. Behind the Scenes gives you a better idea who Jack Mavrogordato was and how he lived his life. It also reveals his passion for the birds he flew and how he devoted his life to learning everything he could about them. A great completion to a set that should find its way into every falconer's possession.
